After getting really excited about Yep, but then finding out that they only deal with PDFs, I’ve been looking for a solution that would allow me to open up a window and view all of one type of document on my mac no matter where it is on my hdd and also be able to tag specific documents.

Then it hit me, Spotlight has this functionality built in! All you have to do is build yourself a couple of smart folders and you’re good to go.

Smart Folders in OS X

Just open a finder window, then go to the File->New Smart Folder and select the options you want. For instance, if you want Yep like functionality, choose “Kind” then “PDF.” Then, if you want to tag a file, command-click it and choose “get info,” then in the box labeled “spotlight comments” add some keywords for easy searching.
